Eugene McCarthy for President 1968
After LBJ decided not to seek election to a seond term and after Bobby Kennedy was assassinated, Gene McCarthy a Senator from Minnesota and a WWII Veteran became the ardent and outpsoken anti-Vietnam War candidate of the Democratic Party. (He was not related to the infamous red-baiting Republcan Senator Joseph R. McCarthy of Wisconsin, for whom the term 'McCarthyism' emerged from the politically repressive House Unamerican Activities Committee and the conformist era of the 1950s). Eugene McCarthy lost the democratic nomination in the turbulent infamous Democratic Convention of Chicago '68. The party's Presidential nominee, Hubert Humphrey, and his running mate, Vice Presidential Candidate, Edmund S. Muskie, were soundly defeated by Richard Nixon in 1968. McCarthy sought the democratic nomination for President again in 1972, but was defeated by George McGovern, who became the democratic nominee and again lost to Richard M. Nixon.
